The size of the crate must fit the puppy! That means the crate for a seventy pound adult dog will not be suitable for the 7 lb. puppy.
People tend to greatly oversize crates. Crates only need to be large enough for a puppy to stand up and turn around in. The smaller airline type crates are relatively inexpensive or you could look into borrowing one for a small puppy. Or, you can partition off part of the larger crate so a puppy can’t eliminate in one end of the crate and sleep in another end.
If you want to figure out how long a young puppy can be left in a crate unattended without the danger of eliminating there is a simple formula. Take the age of the puppy in months and add one and that will give you an idea of how long you can leave your puppy alone.
If your puppy is eight weeks old you will be able to leave her for three hours before she will have to go out. This is just a guideline and all puppies are individuals, but it is inhumane to leave an eight week old puppy in a small crate for an eight hour workday. The puppy will have to eliminate, and will be forced to lie in its own waste. So be prepared to come home at lunch time or hire someone...(members login here to continue reading)

VIDEO - Housebreaking Problems

Housetraining your dog or puppy is a matter of you being aware of when your dog needs to go outside, and going outside with him, and showing them the correct place to relieve themselves. When you have a puppy that's six to ten weeks old, this means that you are going to be going outside with your puppy every time that puppy wakes up, every time that puppy has been playing for ten minutes or more, after your puppy's gotten a drink, or after your puppy has had a meal. Sometimes it …watch video>> |

VIDEO - Excessive Barking

Dogs bark. It's one of the things that dogs do. Some dogs bark a whole lot more than others. Certain breeds of dogs are more prone to barking than others. If you have a herding dog, like a sheltie or a German shepherd, they're going to bark because that's one of the things they were bred to do. If you have a terrier, because they're scrappy little things and were bred to go underground to bark at vermin, they also may have a little bit more voice than the…watch video>> |

VIDEO - Dog Jumps on People

Dogs love people, and they love coming to greet you. And this is nice when Vegas has four feet on the ground, and I can pet him, and he's not licking me, jumping on me, chewing on my hands, or in any other way being obnoxious. It's fun to have a dog that knows how to greet people. You have to remember that when your dog comes to see another person, and especially a guy like my Vegas here, who is half golden retriever and half Labrador retriever, and people…watch video>> |

VIDEO - Dog Always Runs Away

For most dog owners, keeping your dog in your own yard is not only something that you want to achieve, but in most places, it's the law. To keep your pet safe and happy, and to keep yourself happy, you need to keep them at home. Now the best way to do that, obviously, is with a good fence. But not everybody lives in an area where a fence is an appropriate or even allowable item for them to have in their yard. However, good fences make great neighbors, and if you can…watch video>> |

VIDEO - Problems with Digging

Digging is something that dogs do. For some breeds, that is something they were bred to do. For instance, your little Dachshund was actually bred to go into a hole after a badger. So for some of these breeds, digging or tunneling under things is a very natural and instinctive thing for them to do. For a lot of dogs, though, digging just means that they're bored. If you have a big German shepherd like this, a large, active breed, and you don't give them much to do, and…watch video>> |

VIDEO - Dog Chews Up Everything

Dogs chew. That's just something that dogs do. The trick is to make sure they're chewing on things you want them to chew on instead of things in your household that you don't want them to chew on. Basically, if you have a young dog, a puppy that's perhaps under two years of age, you need to be really careful about allowing them to have full freedom in your house without supervision. Some dogs, from a young age, are very good and never touch anything that belongs to humans, and…watch video>> |
